                                                                                                (motion SECONDED and PASSED)

Awards

Bob Doherty introduced Matt Haynes, of the Ducks Group Sales department who presented Matthew Kresky and Tanner Woodbury the C.H.A.M.P.S. Ducks scholarship awards of $2000 each as well as a Ducks team signed jersey. Adam Johnston was awarded the C.H.A.M.P.S. Kings scholarships of $2000. Adam Johnston and William Kosch were both awarded the Carmen Starr Scholarship.

Commissioner’s Report

Bob Doherty read a passage from Max DePree about leadership.  “It is important to understand that leadership is a posture of indebtedness. The process of leading is a process of fulfilling commitments made to both persons and to the organization. A leader’s promises are her commitments. Keeping those promises and the way they are kept are parts of the mystery in the art of leadership. Knowing what to do and what not to do are as fully important of the job”.

Bob Doherty informed the board that 7 candidates from the Socal area were elected and that Steve Laing was elected as the new CAHA President. In addition, Bob, on behalf of Therese Phillips, thanked the SCAHA board for supporting Therese Phillips’ candidacy. She also was elected to the CAHA board.

Bob Doherty informed the board that the LAHOA contract for next season was executed. There will be a joint announcement from LAHOA and SCAHA. It will read something like: “Southern California Amateur Hockey Association and the Los Angeles Hockey Officials Association are pleased to announce they have reached a two year contract that spans the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 hockey seasons. The LAHOA board directors and the SCAHA club presidents both unanimously approved the agreement.”

Bob Doherty reported on two proposals that were submitted to him via email for discussion. Both of the proposals are a result of the increasing costs in fuel.

1)    The first proposal is to divide any division with more than 16 teams into two sub divisions- North and South. One problem could be that one division has all of the stronger teams and normally they would have all made playoffs. In this scenario a team in this division who places fifth would not make the playoffs. Another problem is that the teams in the same division will always play each other and the question arises do the families really want to sign up for this.

2)    The second proposal concerns divisions that have teams located at opposite extremities. For example one team in Anaheim and another one in Bakersfield. In order to cut down on the driving, the teams would play double header games in their scheduled weekend. Again in principle it sounds fine except in the actual execution it may not. For example teams that have 16 teams would never play each other twice. They would play each other once in the SCAHA schedule. Implementing a proposal like this would then result in unbalancing the schedule. Another problem could arise with injured star players, and/or suspended players who normally would miss one game but now would miss two in that particular weekend.

Bob stated it is too premature to discuss these options or motion or vote on them at this time without analyzing all the ramifications. He is presenting it for the presidents to think about and we will table it until the September meeting.

Deputy Commissioner’s Report

No report at this time.

Staff Reports

Member Services – Wendy Goldstein reminded the presidents to make sure the LOI’s get submitted to her in a timely manner. In reviewing the LOI’s she has received thus far, the teams appear to have healthy rosters. She informed the presidents that the registrars can review their coaches’ levels and dates of expiration from the USA Hockey web site. Wendy stated that if there are any issues with completed screenings, to please email her and she will check on them.

Treasurer – Bob Driffill distributed the financial statements dated June 30, 2008. Year to date, SCAHA made a net balance of $18,000. The $7,000 in college scholarship funds that were awarded tonight will be expensed out on the next financial report. Ron White stated that the report does not include the SCAHA subsidy for the equipment program. Bob Doherty concurred and stated that this will be expensed from the upcoming 2008-2009 season.

Ice Convener – Chris Carcerano distributed the SCAHA preliminary calendar. SCAHA will be scheduling 5 pre-season games this year.  This is due in part to where the December holidays fall in the calendar. Some key points are:

·         Preseason declarations and ice slots by August 14, 2008

·         Sept. 15 is the last date for declaration of AA teams dropping to A. This is a SCAHA rule.

·         There are three-3 Girls’ mandated CAHA weekends. Chris stated he will not be

scheduling exhibition games with these girls’ teams during these weekends.

·         Chris stated that he will be scheduling games for the Midget 18 division during the SCAHA and CAHA Select camps.

·         The SCAHA Select camp is scheduled for Dec. 13-14, 2008.

·         SCAHA will analyze the preseason games to determine the appropriate declared team levels. They will have 4 games from the preseason to review. A team that goes 0-17 may be good for the team and the club, however it is not good for the league and the Commissioner has the authority to do determine the appropriate team level.

Chris stated that the Wildcats and the Jaguars have yet to submit their preliminary declarations to him.

Statistician – Bob Doherty reported on behalf of Annie Fisher who was absent. The SCAHA managers’ meeting will be held on August 10th or August 17th at the Phoenix Club, in Anaheim. Once the details are finalized, Annie will send out an email to all of the clubs.

A.C.E. Coordinator

Bob Doherty reported on behalf of Larry Cahn who was absent. Please make sure that all of your coaches have been screened. There is no grace period. They must be screened and on the compliance list before they will be permitted to be rostered on any team. Ron White reminded the presidents that the Level 4 coaching certification clinic is in Reno on August 21-24. Please make sure that coaches needing level 4 register by July 15. There will be another Level 4 clinic available in September, in Phoenix. Ron White stated there is no reciprocity for Canadian coaching certification levels.
